Kaspersky Secures Mobile Phones at InfoSecurity Europe

April 12, 2005

Stand 550, Olympia, London - 26th-28th April 2005

Kaspersky Lab will be highlighting the issues of viruses and mobile devices at Infosecurity Europe later this month; the event will be running from the 26th - 28th April at Olympia in London. The company will be demonstrating Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Symbian OS on Stand 550 and visitors to the stand will be able to download the beta version onto compatible mobile phones. In addition, world-renowned antivirus researcher and founder of Kaspersky Lab, Eugene Kaspersky, will be presenting 'Discovering the Secret of an Effective Battle Against Viruses' in the Technical Seminar Theatre on Wednesday 27th April at 13.15.

Today's threats can reach global epidemic proportions within hours or even minutes. The quick release of virus definition updates, together with the development of new technologies for detecting today's complex threats, is more important than ever. During his presentation, Eugene Kaspersky will provide a fascinating insight into the daily running of the Kaspersky Virus Lab, including an explanation of the methodology and processes used to combat a virus epidemic.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Symbian OS provides real-time interception of viruses on mobile phones running Symbian 6.1 and 7.0. Consisting of an antivirus monitor that intercepts viruses in real time, and an antivirus scanner that checks files for malicious code on demand, Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Symbian OS offers a wide range of configuration options including scheduling scans and defining file types to be scanned. Updates to the antivirus database can be downloaded via Kaspersky Lab's dedicated WAP site either at a scheduled time or on demand.

“The emerging threat of viruses on mobile phones should be a concern for all business users,” comments David Emm, Senior Technology Consultant of Kaspersky Lab. “Smartphones will become the high risk media that floppy disks became in the 80's, particularly when they are used to synchronise application data to PCs. And it's not just their own offices organisations should worry about. An employee visiting a customer site may also unwittingly infect a device there and who can afford a costly law suit? The bad guys are just building on a concept at the moment, but it is only a matter of time until the number of smartphones reaches 'critical mass' and we see a large scale mobile phone virus outbreak.”

Also on Stand 550 will be a screen displaying in real-time the names of the viruses that Kaspersky Lab analysts are busy detecting back in Moscow. This information provides an overall view of activity in the malware world, and shows how for every 'loud' virus, there are hundreds of 'quiet' ones that normally users never hear about. The screen also highlights the trend towards malware writing for financial benefit with the amount of new Trojans that occur each day linked to phishing scams and other data theft.

Other new products that Kaspersky Lab will be introducing on Stand 550 include Kaspersky Guard@Net, an integrated content security management solution which protects enterprise networks against viruses, hackers and spam, and Kaspersky Personal Security Suite, which includes antivirus and anti-spam solutions and a personal firewall.
