Kaspersky Lab and ITU Co-host Cyber-Security Debates at ITU Telecom World 2012

October 2, 2012

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content and threat management solutions, together with ITU (International Telecommunication Union), the United Nations agency for information and communication technology, have announced the main topics for high level discussions on cyber-security at ITU Telecom World 2012 (October 14-18, 2012, Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, United Arab Emirates)

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content and threat management solutions, together with ITU (International Telecommunication Union), the United Nations agency for information and communication technology, have announced the main topics for high level discussions on cyber-security at ITU Telecom World 2012 (October 14-18, 2012, Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, United Arab Emirates).

Kaspersky Lab, which is in partnership with ITU and its cyber-security executing arm the International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats (IMPACT), has contributed to the high-level cyber-security agenda for a series of open and closed debates at ITU Telecom World this year. The debates will feature panellists including thought leaders in the corporate sector, high-ranking policy makers and regulators from around the world. Topics will include national cyber-security in general, mitigating risks posed by major coordinated cyber-attacks at the national level in particular, and strengthening international cooperation in response to the growing threats.

Questions driving cyber-security discussions are as follows:

- Are nations prepared and ready to respond to cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure?
- Is there a need for government and/or international regulation and standardization?
- What are the attribution, deterrence and containment strategies that are already in place, or that need to be put in place?

Eugene Kaspersky to Deliver Keynote Speech

Kaspersky Lab co-founder and CEO Eugene Kaspersky will deliver a keynote speech at the event outlining the magnitude and global nature of cyber-threats today. The speech will take place on October 15 at 17:30 in the Al Multaqua room of the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. It will focus on the latest attacks involving highly complex malware, such as Flame and Gauss (discovered by Kaspersky Lab during the course of investigations initiated by ITU and IMPACT), the consequences of such attacks, and possible response solutions.

Commenting briefly on the underlying message of his upcoming keynote, Eugene Kaspersky said: “The threat of cyber-war is very real and very serious, with the potential to cause grave consequences for the human population of the world. And this isn’t some far-off potential threat of the future: the potential to cause catastrophic damage with cyber-weapons already exists. For example, there could be dozens of cyber-war attacks taking place around the world right this minute – about which we know nothing and which for one ominous reason or another don’t end up on the evening news. The only possible solution to getting the upper hand in combatting cyber-weapons of war – both their proliferation and use – lies in effective, decisive international cooperation, and that is why an event like ITU Telecom World is so crucial. The event provides a platform for the much-needed dialogue between industry and governments to enable the development of a framework for the proactive measures that need to be taken as soon as possible.”

ITU Telecom World 2012

Cyber-security is one of a number of core subjects to be discussed at ITU Telecom World 2012.
