The world's first Linux-based rescue disc is on the way
Cambridge, UK, November 25, 1999 - Kaspersky Lab Int., a fast-growing international anti-virus software development company, announces the public release of the first commercial version of AVP for Linux/FreeBSD Unix.
This package is the world's first comprehensive anti-virus defence system for workstations, file servers and application servers operating under OS Linux/FreeBSD Unix. AVP for Linux/FreeBSD Unix includes three main components: AVP anti-virus scanner, anti-virus filter AVP Daemon and background virus interceptor AVP Monitor.
AVP Scanner is on-demand anti-virus scanner, which can be run directly by a user or with a help of a third-party scheduler. AVP Daemon is a variation of the anti-virus scanner with optimised loading method oriented for operating on WEB servers and mail gateways. AVP Monitor is a client part of AVP Daemon that intercepts all file operations (starting, opening and initialisation of modules) and checks objects for viruses.
In accordance with the principles of Linux distributing Kaspersky Lab has published parts of AVP for Linux source code. This gives all users a chance to integrate AVP into their own Linux applications and to develop new applications.

In the following AVP for Linux/FreeBSD Unix versions (free for registered users during subscription period) many new features will be added: a flexible event scheduler, anti-virus database updates download directly from the Internet, graphical user interface X-Window, e-mail notifications on virus attacks, quarantining of infected and suspicious objects.
"At the end of this year Kaspersky Lab will introduce AVP Z.E.S. Linux world's first bootable Linux-based rescue disc with pre-installed AVP," - comments Kaspersky Lab's CTO Mikhail Kalinichenko, "If a computer has been affected by a virus attack and has lost it's booting ability then AVP Z.E.S. Linux (it supports all major file systems including FAT, FAT32, NTFS, HPFS, Linux) will give a chance of the most effective and time-saving recovery with no dependence on operating system installed. Other anti-virus vendors, as usual, support only FAT file system. This significantly limits the possibility of successful recovery of infected computers."
As soon as AVP Z.E.S. Linux project is finished the new Linux-based Rescue Discs will be included in all AVP commercial packages.
