New security solution protects home and corporate users from cyber-threats
Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of Internet threat management solutions that protect against all forms of malicious software including viruses, spyware, hackers and spam, announces the release of a new product that protects Mac computers from malware. Kaspersky Antivirus for Mac is based on Kaspersky Lab’s new award winning antivirus engine which increases system scanning speed thanks to improved processing of objects and optimised use of system resources, particularly on dual and quad-core processor platforms. The security solution strengthens the defence provided by Apple and provides a platform to add additional security modules as new threats emerge.
The new product for Mac OS X (versions 10.4.11 and higher) has been designed to protect home and corporate networks from multiplatform IT threats. Kaspersky Antivirus for Mac doesn’t just protect Mac OS from viruses, worms and Trojans; it also defends against the same types of threats for Windows and Linux operating systems preventing Macs from being used as an easy path to spread malware.
"The release of Mac OS X made the interaction of multiplatform computers considerably easier and Mac PCs have now become intertwined with many corporate and home networks", says Vartan Minasyan, Product Manager Mac products, Kaspersky Lab. 'These unprotected machines are like open gates through which malicious programs can penetrate any computer in a network which, in some organisations, could result in tens of thousands of machines being affected and significant financial losses.”
“Apples success in growing market share has been reflected with increased interest from cybercriminals. Over the last nine months we have seen an increase in Mac threats which have gained much publicity within the Apple community”, says Andreas Lamm, Managing Director Kaspersky Lab Europe. “Apple has done an adequate job protecting its users against a limited threat. As a world leader in software security Kaspersky Lab can considerably strengthen a Mac’s defences. It is our business to understand the techniques of cybercriminals and protect our customers. And: we are very good at it.”
Automatic hourly security updates for comprehensive protection Kaspersky Lab’s new product has access to the company’s global antivirus database that includes information on more than 20 million malicious programs for a range of platforms. The antivirus databases for Kaspersky Antivirus for Mac are updated hourly, as are the company’s antivirus for Windows PCs and Unix operating systems.
Kaspersky Antivirus for Mac scans files and email attachments downloaded from the Internet in real time. The new product is also exceptional for its distributed use of system resources: when user activity increases, the virus scanner is deprioritised, offering the user complete access to the computer’s system resources and increasing the performance of user applications while it is scanning.
Mac look-and-feel interface
Kaspersky Lab has designed its new product with a familiar Mac style interface making it easy to set-up and configure for both novices and more experienced users. Information about the protection status and any necessary user actions are presented in a graphic format that is easy to understand. The new product includes an automated mode, so the program takes decisions automatically and doesn’t bother users with unnecessary requests.

Kaspersky Antivirus for Mac was especially designed to meet the needs of this operating system, offering complete compatibility with all versions of the OS from 10.4.11 onwards. Other technical requirements include: a Mac with the Intel processor, 512 MB available RAM and 80 MB available hard drive space.
